At Sutton Music Trust, we advocate music learning for all people, of all ages and at all stages. As part of her CPD, Emily Murphy (Senior Vocal Curriculum Leader) attended the Association of the Teachers of Singing (AOTOS) Autumn Conference, to deepen her knowledge and explore different techniques and approaches to vocal teaching.
Entitled ‘A Breath of Fresh Air: Breathing Methods to Bring to Your Practice’, the AOTOS Autumn Conference was held in November 2024. The conference explored three different breathing methods, all of which started as general breathing techniques for health and speech. These techniques proved to be so successful that they have been adapted over the years by experienced singing practitioners for use by singers.
The conference featured keynote speeches on Accent Method by Linda Hutchison, Sally Dennis and Abi Simpson, Transformational Breathing by Barbara Amoakohene Pursey and Buteyko Breathing by Kate Cubley, as well as an abstract presentation by Dr Jenevora Williams.
The conference was a fascinating insight into how different breathing techniques can be adopted and adapted for singers and we strongly recommend anyone interested in the voice to get researching!
As a singer and singing teacher myself, I have found Accent Method and the work of Dr. Ron Morris particularly helpful and would highly recommend all vocal specialists read his book “If in doubt, breathe out!”
