A concert fit for a King!

Sutton Music Trust loves what we do and believes the experience of working, playing, and listening together is hugely beneficial and rewarding for all. Through our KS1 Big Sing, we aim to bring together young singers from across Sutton to sing together and celebrate music in all its forms.

At the end of April, Sutton Music Trust welcomed KS1 singers from 15 Sutton primary schools to participate in our KS1 Big Sing: ‘A Coronation Celebration’. With the upcoming Coronation, it seemed fitting for our concerts to feature music about Kings, Queens and celebrations, and each school choir enjoyed selecting and rehearsing songs based on our theme. In addition to these solo songs, the choirs had been working incredibly hard since January to present a varied and challenging programme, including Handel’s ‘Zadok the Priest’.

During our concerts, each choir had the opportunity to showcase the solo songs that they had been learning in school, as well as come together to celebrate with a massed sing. The choirs did an absolutely fantastic job and were rewarded with standing ovations from our enthusiastic audiences! Sutton Music Trust was incredibly impressed by the standard of singing and would love to welcome the young singers who participated in our KS1 Big Sing to join our borough choirs.

Feedback on the 2023 KS1 Big Sing

“Thank you, the children have not stopped talking about the Big Sing concert, the event was very special to them. The feedback from parents has been lovely; they were amazed at the high standards of singing and loved the song choices. Thank you for helping the children sing the massed choir songs with confidence. We are looking forward to singing with you in the future.”

“The KS1 Big Sing is a wonderful opportunity for infant-age children from across the local area to practise, perform and appreciate music together. The repertoire was carefully selected to ensure children experienced a range of genres, some of which children would not normally encounter until they are much older. Emily, the Sutton Music Trust Senior Vocal Curriculum Leader, was exceptionally engaging, and the children gained a great deal from their vocal workshop, which took place in school prior to the big day. The practice resources for the massed choir were easy to access, even for those teachers less confident with music. The children (and parents!) loved every minute of the concert itself. Thank you – looking forward to next year!”

“What a wonderful opportunity for KS1 pupils from across the Borough of Sutton. Our children loved learning the songs for this event and had a wonderful time performing with the other schools. Thank you Sutton Music Trust for organising!”

“I liked the Big Sing because I had lots of fun!”

“It has been a rewarding process of teaching a young choir (years 1 and 2) the music for the KS1 Big Sing. They have really benefited from this experience seeing the historical and present connection with the music and being able to celebrate amongst a wider community of schools. The songs have also made a wider impact on the progress of singing skills that KS1 have also been very much part of at Cheam Fields.”
