Sutton Music Trust is passionate about providing musical opportunities for all children in the London Borough of Sutton, whether it be through learning an instrument, joining an ensemble, or working with teachers to grow their music provision. For the first time since the pandemic, the Young Musicians Training Orchestra (YMTO) visited two schools to perform for children in Key Stages 1 and 2.
On Thursday, 13th July, YMTO visited The Federation of St Elphege’s Catholic Schools and Wallington Primary Academy to provide concerts highlighting each section of the orchestra whilst treating them to some of the varied repertoire that YMTO had learnt through the academic year.
The day started at The Federation of St Elphege’s Catholic Schools, where YMTO were joined by over twenty violin and cello players from the school. Our students from each section of the orchestra were excellent at demonstrating how their instruments work and the sounds that they make.
"It was such a great experience for our children to hear live music played by children of their own age. They learned about the instruments of the orchestra and listened to a lovely, varied programme. An added bonus for us was that some of the children in Year 5 were able to join in with pieces that they had learnt over the year. Thank you."
Carole Wileman, Music Co-Ordinator for The Federation of St Elphege's Schools
After a picnic lunch in the park, YMTO made their way to Wallington Primary Academy to perform for younger year groups in the school. Children were very keen to answer questions about the orchestra and even to come up and take part in a conducting workshop led by YMTO conductor David Brooker!
