The London Music Fund (LMF) provides four-year scholarships to outstanding young musicians across the London boroughs in partnership with London’s 32 Music Education Hubs. Sutton Music Service is incredibly proud to be part of this partnership and, to date, has 18 present and past scholars. Scholarships are awarded to students who show promise on their musical instrument but may not be able to continue with their studies.

The London Music Fund is in its tenth anniversary year. One of SMS’s new scholars, Tanusha, featured in an article by Music Teacher Magazine, focusing on the charity’s impact on young people across the capital. In the article, Tanusha says how she would like to play at the Royal Albert Hall in the future.

The LMF scholarships are usually offered to students in Year 5 at the latest. However, because no scholarships were awarded during the pandemic, the offer was changed to include students in Year 6 to stop them from missing out on the opportunity to apply.

Sutton Music Service ran its first LMF Nomination Workshop online in April, where Head of Music Service Gareth Gay and Senior Instrumental Curriculum Leader Claire Cossins met with potential scholars and their families. This event was an opportunity for families to learn more about the scholarship and the commitment and support required from students and their families. The workshop also included simple music games to hear students play their instruments.

New and graduating scholars were invited to an Awards and Playing event on 31st October at the Royal College of Music. As part of their scholarship, scholars get the chance to rehearse and perform for Playing Days- allowing them exciting opportunities to play in venues that professionals perform in.
