High Ashurst 2026
On Friday 6th March 2026, 42 students from Sutton Music Trust (SMT) arrived at the beautiful High Ashurst residential site in Dorking, Surrey, ready for an exciting and memorable weekend away. Students from Year 4 to Year 8, drawn from SMT Ensembles, Music Academy and in-school lessons, came together for a weekend filled with music-making, creativity and challenge activities.
For many of our students, this was their first time staying away from home without parents, but they rose to the occasion brilliantly. Over the course of the weekend, students grew in confidence, formed lasting friendships and supported one another – returning home tired, happy and rightly proud of what they had achieved.
One parent shared their experience of the weekend:
I really appreciate the care and thoughtfulness that went into making it a safe and welcoming experience for the children. Arianna didn't know anyone when she arrived (a big ask of a 9 year old) - and I really appreciate the way that you and the team gave special thought to bunking arrangements and social activities in a way that helped her to feel comfortable and make friends. She's made 2 friends who we hope to stay in touch with and she is very keen to return again to next year's camp (as well as feeling musically inspired) As a relieved parent, a very BIG thank you to all of you!

We were also delighted to be supported by two of our senior students, Jenny and Archana from the Young Musicians Orchestra, whose contribution was invaluable. They helped take photos throughout the weekend, encouraged younger students with their playing, and provided a friendly and familiar presence, especially for those new to SMT activities.
Alongside focused rehearsal time, students enjoyed a wide range of social activities, including a campfire with toasted marshmallows, a lively student talent show featuring everything from magic to dance, and a cosy movie night in the cabins (with plenty of snacks!). On Saturday afternoon, students also took part in adventure activities such as a challenge course and climbing wall. These experiences helped build trust, confidence and teamwork, skills that were soon evident in their ensemble playing, as students began to listen more closely, support one another and perform as a cohesive team.
On Sunday, families were invited to an open rehearsal, where students proudly shared the progress that they had made as part of our scratch orchestra, showcasing what they had learned in just one weekend. We were delighted to present a choir at this year’s performance, who performed A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman. With several students stepping forward to sing solo lines, the performance was a truly moving moment, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
We are already looking forward to next year’s residential and can’t wait to see our students shine once again, both musically and in confidence!
