Summer Concert Week 2024

Summer Concert Week 2024

At Sutton Music Trust, we want our students to be able to celebrate their successes and work as part of a team to perform high-quality concerts. Our Summer Concert Week showcased the talents of all our students in our bands, orchestras, and choirs, performing to capacity audiences at St Andrew’s Church in Cheam and All Saints Church Carshalton.

Summer Concert Week opened on Monday, 1st July, with performances from our junior orchestras and wind band. This concert included combined performances of the Young Musicians Training Orchestra (YMTO), the Sutton Youth Training Band (SYTB) and the Young Musicians String Group (YMSG), featuring music to celebrate the Paris Olympics this summer.

To celebrate our most beloved conductor Roger Willey, who passed away in March, our next concert saw performances from the Sutton Youth Symphonic Band (SYSB), the Sutton Youth Wind Orchestra (SYWO), together with a combined band of alumni and friends. This concert showcased series of film melodies from Star Wars, The Lion King, and Lady Gaga’s popular dance tunes. In the concert’s second half, the combined band paid tribute, performing some of Roger’s favourite music. Roger dedicated over 30 years of his career to the Music Trust, and we were honoured to be joined by so many to celebrate his life.

On Friday 5th July the concert started with the Young Musicians Orchestra (YMO) playing a poetic programme, including pieces such as ‘Pastime with Good Company’ by King Henry VIII and ‘Hymn of Thanksgiving’ by Beethoven. The Sutton Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) pivoted with Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ then brought us a contrasting taste of South America ended with a rousing ‘Danzón No. 2’ by Mexican composer Arturo Marquez.

Our final concert showcasing our choirs took place at All Saints Church, Carshalton. The concert opened with the Sutton Young Singer (SYS) presenting a Scottish folk lullaby ‘Baloo Balerie’ and an uplifting song ‘I’m Still Singing’. Followed by the older group the Sutton Youth Choir (SYC) performed a Latin motet ‘Laudamus Te’ and Alicia Keys’ ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ giving the audience a diverse musical experience.

The inclusive ensemble Sutton Community Choir (SCC) presented some most-loved Broadway and popular choral arrangements such as ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’, ‘Unforgettable’ and ‘Flowers’ by Miley Cyrus. We closed our concert with a cheerful massed sing – ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music’.

Well done to the team for another display of marvelousness in the Summer Concert last night. Another fantastic display of skillset, musicianship, comradery, and teamwork!
