As part of our efforts to recognise and celebrate the hard work, commitment, and dedication of our students, Sutton Music Trust (SMT) became a Jack Petchey Achievement Award Centre in June 2025. After an exciting nomination process, we are delighted to confirm our first three winners!
Over the months of September and October, students, parents, tutors, and staff sent in their nominations for the Jack Petchey Achievement Award, which recognises outstanding commitment, dedication, and contribution to the SMT ensembles. Winners of the award are allocated a grant of £300 each to invest back into the ensembles in an area of their choice.
Nominations were collected online and on paper at ensemble rehearsals, thanks to the help of the Sutton Music Trust Youth Forum (SMTYF). We collected 24 nominations, and the three winners were chosen at a special meeting of SMTYF – to ensure fairness and transparency, nominations were anonymised.
Congratulations to:
- Elinor, member of the Sutton Youth Wind Orchestra
- Jethro, member of the Young Musicians Orchestra
- Zara, member of the Young Musicians Orchestra
Read below why these students were nominated!
Elinor
“Elinor goes above and beyond for her support and dedication to Sutton Music Trust. Not only is she a talented musician and a member of the senior wind band, but she is an SMT Trustee and chair of the Youth Forum, ensuring the student voice is at the heart of everything we do at SMT. She is a dedicated member of our musical community and strives for continual improvement. We are lucky to have her on the team!”
Nominated by Andy Bragg and Maddie Wood, SMT Staff
Elinor has decided to put her £300 towards the fundraising efforts for the Loire Valley Tour in July 2026.
Jethro
“Jethro has been an avid member of SMT for more than 5 years now, starting from his time in the Young Musicians String Group (YMSG). Jethro has always been enthusiastic and has shown his passion in his Music classes and performing in the orchestra and was given an Outstanding Contribution Award during his time in YMSG. He participated in various projects and activities such as Philharmonia Orchestra workshops and performances throughout the years. Jethro also took part in the “Note Home” reward scheme competition wherein his design was shortlisted! His latest achievement was his success in his application for the SMT Youth Forum wherein he was given a role of a Committee Member.
Jethro takes great pride in his role as he is given a chance to impart his ideas, opinions and he work in various projects to support the vision, growth and development of SMT. Above all, Jethro has great love in Music, he has worked very well with all his Tutors, Conductors and fellow Musicians all throughout the years and served as a good role model to his peers.”
Nominated by a Parent
Jethro has decided to put his £300 towards a social event for the Ensembles.
Zara
“I didn’t think Zara was quite ready for the higher standard of repertoire when she joined the Young Musicians Orchestra (YMO). But she persisted and now is a strong player. She is a crucial member of our section, helps others when they are lost, and always shows up with a smile.”
Nominated by Helen Burgess, Tutor
Zara has decided to put her £300 towards refreshments for a social event for the Ensembles.
These awards will be given to Elinor, Jethro, and Zara at our upcoming Autumn Concert Week. Congratulations to all three students!
