The National Plan for Music Education calls for pupils to learn an instrument from a specialist instrumental music tutor as part of a whole-class ensemble project. In 2021/22, Sutton Music Service worked with over 2200 pupils in 21 schools across the borough to give them the experience of learning an instrument for a whole academic year.
On Tuesday, 5th July, Sutton Music Service hosted its first Key Stage 2 Instrumental Festival since 2019 and our first at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon for many years. Over 450 pupils from 15 of Sutton’s Primary Schools performed on the world-famous Pheonix Concert Hall stage as the culmination of their year-long Whole-Class Ensemble Tuition (WCET) curriculum. Each school has focused on learning a specific instrument or combination of instruments since September 2021: the ukulele, violins and cellos, trumpets and baritones, trumpets and trombones, and samba percussion.
The concert concluded with the pupils giving a massed singing performance of “(We Are) Unstoppable” by Emily Barden, accompanied by a house band made up of Sutton Music Service’s tutors.
The event was a fantastic celebration of the pupils’ hard work and enjoyment of making music. For most pupils, it was their first trip to the Fairfield Halls, and their experience of performing on the stage in front of an amazing audience of over 600 is something they will remember for a long time.
A very well done to all of the pupils that took part from:
