Meet the Sutton Music Trust Youth Forum!

Sutton Music Trust (SMT) values and appreciates the opinions of all children and young people in the London Borough of Sutton and strives to shape the program of activities around the youth voice. The Youth Forum is at the heart of student participation.

In March 2025, Sutton Music Trust’s Youth Forum (SMTYF) was re-established and relaunched. Comprising of 16 members from SMT ensembles, the group met for the first time online and immediately made headway with a vision for the future, growth and development of SMT.

Each member wrote an application to join the SMTYF and specified what job they would like to take on. The roles ranged from Chair of the Forum to Fundraising Officer, as well as many other crucial roles. We are pleased to say that the committee comprises of students from Year 6, all the way up to Year 13.

The group began planning a social event for students, brainstorming fundraising ideas, and giving their opinions on all things to do with concerts, such as paper programmes and intervals. The committee attended a social event in July to Horton Park Golf Club to play a game of crazy golf. It was a great evening, where students got to meet each other in person for the first time as a group and create friendships. The group planned the social themselves and it was a huge success! They are looking forward to planning events for all the ensemble students in the future.

Hello from Sophie S, Year 6!

Hello, we are part of the Sutton Music Trust Youth Forum, we meet roughly once a month to discuss how we can improve the trust or change things (for example, choir names) for the better enjoyment of pupils. We take pride in music and our amazing people that make it happen.

Part of what we do is making sure everyone feels welcome and knows each other well enough to not feel awkward. We organize socials to help ensure this bond between pupils and tutors stays strong throughout their musical careers. As well as planning fun events, we also have fundraisers to help musicians who cannot keep playing. We can do this by having a bake sale at one of the academies or the choirs or other activities. All the money raised goes to these charities that hopefully help many musicians make music again.
