Sutton Music Trust loves what we do and believes the experience of working, playing, and listening together is hugely beneficial and rewarding for all. Through our Sutton Sings Festival, we aim to bring together young singers from across Sutton to sing together and celebrate music in all its forms.
Last week, Sutton Music Trust welcomed 810 KS1 and KS2 singers from 31 Sutton primary schools to perform in our Sutton Sings Festival at St. Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Cheam. The festival took place across four days with two concerts each day, accompanied by a live house band of professional musicians. Centered around the over-arching theme ‘Song Journey’, the choirs presented a varied programme of songs depicting different modes of transport and physical journeys (KS1) and emotional journeys (KS2). Each school choir chose two solo songs linked to our theme as well as performing four massed choir songs including call & response songs, rounds and songs in 3-part harmony.
Every year, our large-scale vocal events continue to grow in terms of popularity and scale, resulting in our most recent Sutton Sings Festival. This year, we were thrilled to be joined by a live band of professional musicians, which really elevated the experience for both singers and audience members alike. We very much hope that the children continue to sing in their school choir and also join one of our SMT choirs – there’s no such thing as too much singing!
Emily Muphy, Senior Vocal Curriculum Leader
Our Sutton Sings Festival is a key strand of our singing strategy. Here are some of the benefits of participating:
- Performance opportunity in a large local venue with other Sutton primary schools.
- Opportunity to perform with a live band of professional musicians.
- CPD session for school staff with our Senior Vocal Curriculum Leader to develop skills as a choir leader.
- Vocal workshop in schools with our Senior Vocal Curriculum Leader to work on songs in more detail and provide support.
- Exposes children to new, often challenging, repertoire, including harmony singing.
- Provides a progression route from school choir into our borough choirs.

What a great opportunity for the kids. Emily was brilliant and having the band was a great addition!

The choirs did an absolutely fantastic job and were rewarded with standing ovations from our enthusiastic audiences! Sutton Music Trust was incredibly impressed by the standard of singing and would love to welcome the young singers who participated in our Sutton Sings Festival to join our borough choirs.
