SMT is committed to ensuring that all students make a form of music that matters to them, and this includes higher study at KS4 and KS5. The Young Composers’ project aims to contribute to the increase of students taking on KS5 or degree-level qualifications and provide valuable insights into the composition process.
On 9th June, Wilson’s school hosted the project’s fitting finale; a Showcase Evening featuring performances by Philharmonia musicians of original compositions by GCSE and A-Level students from Glenthorne High School, Wallington County Grammar School and Wilson’s School.
The orchestra’s musicians worked closely with both students and staff from the schools to bring their compositions to life, meaning the audience of family and friends were treated to 10 world premieres! The composers rehearsed their compositions with the musicians and introduced their pieces to share the inspirations behind their work.
The evening was also an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the creativity and dedication the young composers have shown throughout their studies and this project.
I expanded my appreciation for music by listening to other people’s pieces. I rekindled my passion for composing, and listening to my piece performed live by professional musicians really helped develop my understanding of it. Working with the professionals also helped me understand how to choreograph for different instruments.

It was a pleasure to see the work of such talented young composers performed by professional musicians. It was an incredible concert and a fabulous opportunity for learning. A great experience all round!

We are so proud of our continued partnership with the Philharmonia and we were delighted to add this project to our portfolio of work with them. This is part of our commitment to ensuring that all students in Sutton make a form of music that matters to them, including at higher KS4 and KS5 study. Well done to all the composers involved!
