Awards and Rewards at Sutton Music Trust

At Sutton Music Trust (SMT), we believe in recognising and celebrating the hard work, talent, and dedication of our young musicians.

We offer a range of awards and rewards throughout the year, designed to highlight a student’s achievements and encourage their development.

You can read about them below!

These prestigious awards celebrate the commitment, achievement, and contribution of senior students in our bands and orchestras.

The Cheryl Jenkins Award is presented to a member of the Sutton Youth Symphony Orchestra. The SYMSA Award is presented to a member of the Sutton Youth Wind Orchestra.

Presented to students in the Spring and Summer Concert Weeks, the tutor teams of the ensembles choose the winners, who keep the special trophy until the time they are next awarded.

At our Summer Concert Week, students may receive the below certificates, awarded by tutors and conductors to celebrate and recognise effort and progress.

Most Improved

Outstanding Musicianship

Outstanding Contribution

“Note Home” is a way for our tutors to recognise positive aspects of a student’s work in their lessons. Each postcard celebrates a value following the musical alphabet:

Ambition

Behaviour

Collaboration

Development

Enthusiasm

Goals

Postcards are given at all SMT activities, including Music Academy, Ensembles, and all in-school lessons including Whole Class Ensemble Teaching.

The postcards are designed by students, and a winner chosen each year by the Sutton Music Trust Youth Forum!

SMT proudly participates in the Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme for students aged 11-21 in our ensembles.

We award nine prizes through the academic year – each winner receives a £300 grant to benefit whichever area of the SMT ensembles they like.

Nomination periods run each term and are coordinated by the Sutton Music Trust Youth Forum.

An annual grant of £500 is awarded to a promising brass player in Year 7 or above who attends an SMT Wind Band.

The £500 grant can be put towards a variety of areas of musical development, including instrumental lessons, ensemble membership, the opportunity to experience live performance, and more!

Winners also receive a commemorative plaque which they can keep.

Held each July, this exciting event gives students the chance to perform in front of an adjudicator and compete in three separate categories:

Young Pianist of the Year

Young Vocalist of the Year

Young Instrumentalist of the Year

There are a Junior (Year 7 and below) and a Senior (Year 8 and above) category. Participants receive certificates and feedback, and winners get the chance to perform a solo with an SMT ensemble.

The images below represent some of our recent award and reward winners. Congratulations to all these students!
